Bob Denver died yesterday from cancer treatment complications. All that after surviving the quadruple bypass surgery he had earlier this year. So the man who was Maynard G. Krebs and Gilligan is gone now. And that's a shame.

It was Denver's own personal love of jazz that he brought to the character of Dobie Gillis' best friend--Maynard G. Krebs--that made musicians like Thelonius Monk and Dizzy Gillespie household names. And it was the widespread love of the goatee wearing beatnik that several years later inspired the cartoon character of Shaggy from "Scooby Doo, Where Are You?"

And, well, it wasn't called "Skipper's Island" or "Ginger's Atoll" for a reason...
